Starting Myopia Management in Phoenix: Questions for Your Child’s First Consultation

If your child’s glasses prescription keeps getting stronger, you may be wondering whether there is a way to slow those changes. Myopia, or nearsightedness, often progresses during childhood as the eyes grow. A first myopia management consultation is an opportunity to understand your child’s vision, discuss treatment options, and develop a plan tailored to their needs.

What Happens During the First Consultation?

At Modern Sight Eyecare, we begin by reviewing your child’s prescription history, vision concerns, and eye health. We’ll discuss how quickly their nearsightedness appears to be changing and consider factors such as age and family history. Additional measurements, including eye length when appropriate and available, may help assess progression.

Bring any previous glasses prescriptions and details about when your child started wearing glasses. If your child has trouble seeing the classroom board, squints at distant objects, or notices frequent changes in clarity, tell us about those experiences.

Is My Child Ready for Myopia Management?

You do not need to wait until your child has a strong prescription to ask about treatment. Because myopia can progress as children grow, early assessment can help identify when management may be appropriate.

We’ll explain whether your child is a candidate and what slowing progression could realistically mean. Myopia management does not cure nearsightedness or guarantee that prescriptions will stop changing.

Should We Consider MiSight or Stellest?

Two options we offer for eligible children are MiSight® 1 day contact lenses and Essilor® Stellest® eyeglass lenses. Both correct blurry distance vision while helping slow myopia progression, but they fit different routines.

MiSight® 1 day lenses are soft, single-use contacts designed for children who can safely handle contact lenses. They are FDA-approved for myopia control in eligible children ages 8 to 12 when treatment begins. They are worn during the day, discarded after use, and should never be worn while sleeping or exposed to water.

Essilor® Stellest® lenses offer a glasses-based alternative. Their specialized lenslet design helps slow excessive eye growth while correcting distance vision. They are FDA-authorized for eligible children ages 6 to 12 when treatment begins. We can discuss whether glasses or contacts better match your child’s age, prescription, preferences, and daily activities.

Which Questions Should I Ask?

Consider bringing these questions to your child’s Phoenix myopia consultation:

  • How quickly has my child’s prescription changed?
  • Is my child eligible for MiSight or Stellest lenses?
  • What daily wear and care routines will treatment require?
  • How often should we schedule progress checks?
  • What results should we expect, and when might the plan need adjustment?

How Will We Know if Treatment Is Helping?

Follow-up visits are an important part of myopia management. We assess your child’s vision, review how consistently they are using the prescribed lenses, and compare measurements over time. If needed, we can discuss adjustments to keep the plan appropriate as your child grows.
